Highlights
Category of Code
“Just tell me what to bill and I’ll bill it.” A family physician said that to me years ago, when I was (unsuccessfully, it seems) trying to explain coding for observation services.
Dissecting the presenting problem
Acute uncomplicated or problem with systemic symptoms? Chronic? At goal? What is near term? This module will walk you through these issues and provide CPT Assistant references that either answer your question or state that the code set doesn’t provide the definition you’re hoping for.
Mastering data analysis in an E/M visit
In sports we might here, “Let’s go to the videotape!” But in coding, we go to the source. Coders and auditors need to master data analysis. CPT definitions and explanations are critical in accurate level of service selection.
Risk from testing or treatment
CPT is clear that the although the risk of the problem and the risk from additional diagnostic testing or treatment may correlated, the third element is distinct and must be assessed independently from the condition itself.
Description and Learning Objectives
Submitting a claim for Evaluation and Management services has two steps. First, the correct category of code must be selected; second, the level or service that represents the work done and documented in the medical record must be determined. This 3.5-hour, four-module course will cover both of these topics, and include CPT and CMS guidance.
The course covers services defined by medical decision making and time (except ED visits for which time may not be used). This includes office and other outpatient services, hospital services, nursing facility services and home and residence services. Each category has specific related rules.
Level of service is based on either total practitioner time on the date of the visit or medical decision making. The course will review the CPT definitions for problems addressed, how to credit data and determining the risk of additional diagnostic testing or treatment.
This course does not include critical care or prolonged services.
Learning objectives: After the session, a participant will be able to:
- Select the correct category of code to report, and find the citation in the CPT book
- Understand medical decision-making definitions
- Support their knowledge with source citations from the CPT Assistant
