Shared services are E/M services jointly performed by a physician and non-physician practitioner in a facility setting. The service is reported under the National Provider Identifier (NPI) of the practitioner who performs the substantive portion of the service. The substantive portion of the service can be determined by time or medical decision making (MDM). This webinar will describe the CPT rules for using either time or MDM for shared services. Although CPT does not define which professional must document the visit, the webinar will describe what CMS says about documentation.
This webinar is based on information in the 2024 CPT book and will be based on the Medicare Claims Processing Manual at the time of the webinar. (May, 2024) As of 3/19/2024, the last revision of the shared services section was in 2023.
Links to MAC pages about shared services will be provided.
After the session, participants will be able to:
- Describe how to document the substantive portion of shared services based on time
- Identify which MDM element, when performed, must be done by the billing practitioner
- Develop best documentation practices
