Quick Coding Reference Sheet – Psychiatry

This is an E/M reference using the 1995/1997 guidelines. As of Jan 1, 2023 it will no longer be in use. Why have we kept it on the site? In case you are auditing office services from prior to 2021 or all other E/M services prior to 2023.

Psychiatrists and psychiatric NPs and PAs can either use 90792, psychiatric diagnostic evaluation with medical services or evaluation and management codes to evaluate a patient. The advantage to using 90792 over E/M consult codes is that there is not a specific level of history or exam required. Consultation codes and initial hospital services still, in 2022, require three of the three key components. These practitioners can also use office and other outpatient codes to report their services. CPT does not “favor” using one set of codes or another. In general, my recommendation is to use 90792 for the evaluation and E/M codes for medication management.

This quick reference sheet for evaluation and management services cover inpatient and outpatient consults, and inpatient and subsequent hospital services. Specifically for psychiatry, this essential resource includes:

  • CPT® codes for each of the above categories
  • Documentation requirements
  • MDM examples
  • Time thresholds
